Introduction

This issue covers our last golf break in Norfolk and the President’s Golf Day.

Spring Golf Break 2007

The spring golf break was held in Norfolk from Friday 13th April to Monday 15th April. On the Thursday evening, before the start of the competitions, David, Ian, Rod and Hugh joined Andrzej in Norfolk for a spot of bonding in the Kings Arms. The more sober members of the society, Rob, John, Richard and Ray, decided to travel to Cromer on the Friday morning. Having left the South East in glorious sunshine everyone was a bit put out to discover that the visibility at Royal Cromer was less than 150 yards.

As well as playing for the Secretary’s Cup we played the first round of matches for the DIOGS Bowl. The two teams were Old Order (Rod, David, Andrzej and Rob) and New Order (Richard, Ian, Ray, Hugh and John).

Despite not having played the course before and being unable to see the fairways through the mist, John won the day with 33 points.

In the matches, John beat Rob 3&2, Andrzej beat Ray 4&2 and David beat Richard by 2 holes giving Old Order a 1 point lead

In the matches, Hugh beat Andrzej 4&3, Rob beat Ian by 2 holes and John beat David 5&4. Old Order and New Order were now all square.

Our final competition for the President’s Putter was played at Richmond Park Golf Club on Sunday morning. This time, either because John had played the course before or because he was scared he would get lynched if he won again, he came last.

This time it was Ray’s turn for victory, scoring a credible 36 points. However John didn’t go away empty handed as his overall score of 25 points on all of the par 3s won him the Tous Trois Trophie.

In the matches Hugh beat Rob by 2 holes, Andrzej beat John 3&2 and Richard beat Rod 4&3. So New Order scored 5 points to beat Old Order by 1 point.

Richard, the captain of New Order, was delighted to be presented with the DIOGS Bowl by Rod, last year’s winning captain.

A quick rethink and a bit of negotiation with the pro at Sheringham enabled us to start the first competition more or less on schedule, even though the visibility at Sheringham was only marginally better.

John’s coronation

On Saturday we found that Sheringham was closed due to poor visibility but luckily Cromer was clear. So another quick change of plan saw us teeing off at Royal Cromer in the competition for the Treasurer’s Trophy

John triumphed again on a course he had not played before, scoring 34 points.

PRIAPIC

The PRIAPIC competition was held at Tyrrells Wood on Friday 25th May.

David, Rod, Hugh, Andrzej, Rob, Ian and John attended with guests Paul Tuke,  Brian Wright  (last year’s winner), Mathew Wythers and Andy Parkinson.

The president tees off

The Secretary ignored the President’s request that everyone should play off their club handicaps insisting that diogs always played off their society handicaps

This proved to be a smart move on the Secretary’s part as he won the competition with 39 points. At first it looked as if Hugh had also scored 39 points but closer inspection revealed that his club handicap of 25 had been used in calculating his score.

The day was rounded off with a meal at Ashtead Squash Club where Paul provided a splendid spread.

At the end of the meal Brian handed over the “green” jacket to Rob.
