Down In One Golf Society

   Newsletter Issue 2 - July 2000

Introduction

Since the last newsletter we have increased our membership and enjoyed an extremely successful golf break in Norfolk.

New Membership

Bob Anderson has joined the society as a Country Member.  This brings our membership to six. Future growth is anticipated as an optimum size for the society is probably eight.

Norfolk

The spring golf break in Norfolk took place from Saturday 18 to Monday 20 March and was attended by:

    Bob "Two Trophies" Anderson

    Rod "5 Wood" Baker

    Rob "Slicer" Haines

    Andrzej "Two Jumpers" Potocki

David "Grip It And Rip It" Tavner

The first competition was held on Saturday at the Links course at West Runton.  After two rounds of the nine hole course, Andrzej, Bob and David each had a net score of 75.  The play off for the Treasurer's Trophy lasted a further 2 holes with Bob being knocked out at the first hole and David at the second.

The Links at West Runton

In the evening an EGM was held in the Kings Arms, Blakeney during a splendid meal only marred by the VP's insistence that we should try not one but two bottles of the house red.

On Sunday morning, in glorious sunshine, we played for the DIOGS bowl over 18 holes at Royal Cromer. Handicaps for all players had been adjusted by the Handicap Committee the previous evening.  Bob won the bowl with a stableford score of 33. It has to be noted that this was also his score after 17 holes as he decided he needed some bunker practice on the last hole - hitting 3 green side bunkers in succession.  David came second and Rod third.  Rob won the longest drive (not actually the longest off the tee but at least he hit the fairway).  Nobody managed to hit the green on the shortest hole so the prize for Nearest The Pin was not awarded.

In the afternoon's match play Rod played against Rob and David played against Bob over the first seven holes.  Rod won by 2 with 1 hole to play and David won by 3 with 2 holes to play.  The play off for the President's Putter was held on the club's nine hole putting green.  After some unusually accurate putting David won by sinking a hole in one on the last hole.  Again nobody won Nearest The Pin but David did win the Longest Drive.

That evening's meal was taken in the curry house in Holt.  During the meal the President offered his resignation.  However as this offer was not taken seriously by the other members of the committee his presidency remains intact.

The stableford competition for the Secretary's Cup was played over 18 holes at Sheringham (with newly adjusted handicaps).  Bob won the cup with a score of 35. David came second with 34 and Rod third with 29.  There was some discussion as to the validity of Bob's score given that he had taken his mulligan on the hole nominated for Nearest The Pin (which was technically not allowed by the competition rules).  However it was decided to let the result stand as a gesture of goodwill to a new member (he did buy everyone a drink after all).

Five go golfing at Sheringham

As no specific competition had been planned for the afternoon it was decided to play a friendly competition over nine holes with each player using only three clubs.  However in the time it took Andrzej and David to drag themselves away from the comfort of the club house they seemed to forget this three club restriction.  Rod, Bob and Rob did manage to keep to three clubs each although, after a bit of trouble with his putter (his driver), Rod decided to abandon putting altogether chipping in from the high rough on the 6th hole for a birdie.

One at a time please

Future Golfing Trips

The Vice President has been tasked with organising the next golfing break which is due to take place in Kent one weekend in October.  After some prompting and assistance from the other members of the committee the organisation of this event is now back on track.

DIOGS Web Site

DIOGS.com has been registered as our official domain name. Work on the associated web site is currently in hand. Possible uses for the web site could include membership details, a copy of the rules and posting of competition results.  Obviously we may need to restrict access to the more sensitive information to members only.

Society Logo

As you will see from the top of this newsletter the society's logo has undergone a subtle design change to bring it into the 21st century.  I'm sure you will be pleased to hear that this redesign has been undertaken at no cost to the membership. Any comments on the layout or colour scheme should be addressed to the secretary.
