This issue covers our spring golf break, the awards ceremonial meal and the PRIAPIC.

Spring Golf Break

We returned to the Crown Inn in Lewes for our spring golf break in Sussex, held from 5th to 7th April. The hotel had recently featured in the Hotel Inspector TV series and was slightly better than our last visit, although there was no sign of Nina in the bar! Stephen Gulson joined us for the trip to Sussex making eight golfers in all in the party. The first competition, as always, was for the Secretary’s Cup and was played for at Lewes Golf club. Richard won with 35 points, Hugh won the longest drive and Rod won nearest the pin. The match play competitions for the DIOGS Bowl were played in parallel with all of the other competitions and finished all square with one point for each team. In the evening we went for yet another expensive curry, although the amount of alcohol consumed probably contributed towards the high cost.

The following morning we travelled to Seaford Head Golf Club to play for the Treasurer’s Trophy. Hugh was feeling somewhat under the weather from the previous evening’s excesses but managed to put in a brave performance on the course. Andrzej won the trophy with 39 points, David won the longest drive and Hugh won nearest the pin. At the end of the match play competitions New Order had a lead of 2 ½ points to 1 ½. In the evening we went to the Harvey’s brewery pub and somehow managed to drink only wine and not beer. After the meal we retired to our hotel for an early night (we must be getting old)

The final day’s competition for the President’s Putter was held at the East Sussex National Golf Course. Rod won the putter on count back with 30 points, as Andrzej and Hugh also scored 30 points. Rod also won the Longest drive but no there was no nearest the pin winner. In the match play competitions, New Order retained the trophy by drawing the matches with 3 ½ points a side.

All of the cups and trophies were presented to the winners at an award ceremony held on 7th May.

PRIAPIC

This year the President decided to make the PRIAPIC a charity event to raise money for SHARE, which helps disabled people and those with long term health issues. Unfortunately the first date chosen for this event, 7th July, proved to be one of the wettest days of the year. So despite gathering a large number of golfers together at Tyrrells Wood the event had to be abandoned after only playing a few holes.  Undeterred, the President rescheduled the event for 13th August at Gatton Manor and managed to win the event with 36 points. John King came second with 32 and Richard third with 31.
