Introduction

This issue covers the spring golf break and the President’s golf day.

Spring Golf Break

Hugh invited us down to the New Forest to play at his home golf club for the last three days in March. There were 10 golfers, although Rod was unable to make the first day’s competition but did join us for the evening meal.

The first competition, for the Secretary’s Cup, was played on the Dunwood Manor course in persistent rain. Despite the difficult conditions Richard managed to score 35 points and won the cup. As before, Old Order and New Order played against each other in parallel with the competition for the cup. Ian took over the captaincy of New Order as Richard was promoted to Old Order on this occasion. Two four ball better ball matches were played, with David & Rob beating Hugh & Ray 4&2 and Andrzej & Richard beating John & Ian 7&5.

The second competition, for the Treasurer’s Trophy, was played on Bramshaw’s Manor Course, again in persistent rain and with stronger winds than the previous day. Rob won the trophy, scoring 31 points. In the single matches Richard beat Ray 4&3, David beat John 4&2 and Rob beat Ian 5&3.

The last day’s competition was supposed to be played on Bramshaw’s Forest course but this was closed due to the waterlogged conditions. So we played on the Manor course again, although even some of its holes were closed due to the conditions. Naturally it rained again but it did mange to brighten up towards the end of the competition. Richard won the trophy with 37 points. As Old Order had already thrashed New Order there were no more matches to play.

Rob won the Tous Trois Trophy with a total of 34 points.

Despite the weather everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the parrot was a great success, amusing the other guests at the hotel

President’s Golf Day

The President’s golf day was held at Tyrrells Wood in the afternoon of July 20th. There were 8 society members and 5 guests, who were Bruce Tribe, Tony Westray, Martin Fancourt, Keith Gandar and Trevor Snuggs. A team game was played in parallel with the main competition with the best two stableford scores on each hole counting towards the overall total of team points (suitably adjusted for the team of 4). Martin won the main competition scoring an unbelievable 44 points. Martin’s contribution also meant that his team won the team prize with 83 points. There were also prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive, won by Martin and Tony respectively.

In the evening we all made our way to the Rising Sun in Epsom for a meal and a few drinks. Martin was presented with the “green” jacket and gave a gracious acceptance speech.
