Introduction

This issue covers last year’s autumn golf break and the Christmas Competition.

Autumn Golf Break

The autumn golf break in Sussex attracted ten diogs out of their homes for three days of golf (Andrzej, Andy, David, Hugh, Ian, Ray, Richard, Rob, Rod and Stephen). We stayed at the same pub we stayed at five years earlier, The Nags Head in the centre of Chichester. Rod very kindly let Hugh and Rob share his family room!

The first day’s golf was played at Worthing Golf club under dark brooding skies but with great views, especially out to sea. Rod organised the three days and arranged for the club to put out longest drive and nearest the pin markers for us – a first, even if they did give an alternative slant to our name. Ian won the competition for the Secretary’s Cup with a very creditable 36 points. Richard won the longest drive but, as often happens, no one managed to get on the green in one at the nearest the pin hole.

The second day’s golf was played on the Cathedral course at Chichester. David and Stephen failed to arrive for their allotted tee times but hired a buggy and managed to catch the rest of us up by the time we reached the second hole. David won the competition for the Treasurer’s Trophy with 31 points, beating Andrzej on countback. Andrzej won the longest drive and Andy nearest the pin.

Recognition at last (well almost)

In the evening we held our 13th AGM in a local pub. Despite the usual chaos at these meetings, or maybe because of it, Rod found himself ousted as President and replaced by Hugh (life can be cruel sometimes). The other positions on the committee remained unchanged, probably due to apathy on the part of the attendees.

On the final day we played at Bognor Regis golf club for the President’s Putter. Ray livened up proceedings by sporting his Ian Poulter wig, which really did take years off him. Andy Parkinson won the competition with 38 points and the longest drive and nearest the pin were won by Hugh and Ian respectively.

Doesn’t Ray look younger?

Is this the end of the silly hats?

It is now a tradition that this competition is held in January at Hersham Golf Club and this year was no exception. The date chosen was 29th, so we only just made January. Seven members attended, Andrzej, Andy, David, John, Rob, Rod and Stephen. Andy won the trophy with 36 points. Rob also scored 36 points but this time count back worked against him and put him second not third (third place wins).

In the evening we retired to the Prince Of Wales for our Christmas meal.
