Newsletter Issue 3 - November 2000
Introduction
Since the last newsletter the society has increased its membership and enjoyed another extremely successful golf break, this time in Kent.
New Membership
Richard Skeet has joined the society as a Full Member. This brings the membership up to seven. The optimum size for the society is probably eight, so there is room for one more.
Golf Break In Kent
The autumn golf break in Kent, from Friday 20 to Monday 23 October, was attended by:
Bob "Bandit" Anderson
Rod "Black Book" Baker
Rob "Hacker" Haines
Andrzej "President" Potocki
Richard "Snorer" Skeet
David "Talker" Tavner
In the Kings Head in Deal
On the drive down to Kent the heavens opened and everyone was beginning to wonder if golf in late October was such a good idea. Fortunately the next morning brought cloudy skies but no further rain. All of the competitors stayed in the Kings Head in Deal, a very pleasant pub with equally pleasant bar staff.
On the Saturday morning the competitors played the first round for the DIOGS Bowl over two of the nine hole courses at Princes Golf Club (The Shores and The Dunes). This round involved two three ball matches (much to everyone's confusion as it appears that in this format player A can beat player B, B can beat C and yet C can still beat A).
There is more than one way to swing a club
In the afternoon the two winners from the morning's matches, Bob and Richard, played against each other in the second round of the DIOGS Bowl. At the same time as this play off all competitors competed for the President's Putter in a putting competition. Both competitions were played on the third nine hole course at Princes (The Himalayas). Bob won the DIOGS Bowl and David won the President's Putter taking only 14 putts over the nine holes!

In the evening the society held its third AGM, this time in an Indian restaurant in Deal. Although no official record exists from this meeting it can be confirmed that the new committee consists of:
Sunday morning was spent walking the pier, reading the papers and in Bob's case buying an exercise bike. In the afternoon we played for the Secretary's Cup on the 18 hole course at Walmer and Kingsdown. Rod won the cup with 30 stableford points. Andrzej came second with 29 points and Bob and Richard came joint third with 26 points each. Unfortunately David and Richard were unable to stay and enjoy the remainder of the break due to pressure of (at) work.
Back to Princes on Monday morning for another 18 holes of golf (27 holes had been planned but injuries were taking their toll). In a bracing wind the four remaining golfers battled their way round an almost deserted course in fierce competition for the Treasurer's Trophy. Rod was once again the winner scoring 28 stableford points. Bob came second with 24, Andrzej retired hurt and Rob managed to scrape together 16 points (9 of which were scored on the last 4 holes).
All in all a very enjoyable golf break.

Future Golfing Trips
The President has been tasked with organising the next golfing break which is pencilled in for Norfolk sometime towards the end of next May.
DIOGS Web Site
The first cut at the DIOGS web site should be up and running before the end of the year (that is assuming the Secretary can keep off the golf course long enough to get it together).
