Down In One Golf Society

   Newsletter Issue 4 - May 2001

Introduction

Since the last newsletter the society has had its Christmas Meal and enjoyed another extremely successful golf break - this time it was back to Norfolk.

Christmas Meal

Red Peppers was the venue for the meal this year (held untraditionally in January). The meal was attended by all of the members and despite the high ambient noise level everyone seemed to have a good time.

Golf Break In Norfolk

This spring’s  golf break was attended by all of the members. The advanced party set off for Blakeney on the Friday evening (11 May) and on arriving on the Norfolk coast proceeded to undertake a pub crawl with a difference - that is visiting pubs but not actually drinking in them until they found one they liked.

The President’s palace

As there were no competitions arranged for the Saturday morning the time was spent bird watching at Cley Next The Sea.

The first competition, which was for the Treasurer’s Trophy, was played on the 18 hole course at Royal Cromer Golf Club. David won with a stableford score of 30 and Andrzej and Richard came joint second with 29 points.

Later in the afternoon the competitors played for the DIOGS Bowl in a seven hole stableford competition. Richard won on count back as both he and Andrzej had 11 points. Rob came third with 10 points.

In the evening the society retired to the Kings Arms in Blakeney (henceforth referred to as DIOGS Eastern Headquarters) for a meal of steak, beer, wine and brandy. At closing time it was discovered that the last bottle of wine was corked and so a replacement was swiftly acquired from the barman. The members of the advanced party decided to return to their humble abode so that this new bottle could be sampled under the stars. Unfortunately their peaceful contemplation of the universe was soon interrupted by one of the other members, who shall remain nameless (and powerless), turning up and demanding to know the name of each and every star.

On Sunday the competitors played in a series of knockout matches  for the President’s Putter and a newly introduced prize called the DIOGS Millennium Plate. The first round was played over the first nine holes at Sheringham Golf Club. As there were only seven competitors the player with the lowest total stableford score from the first day, Rod, got a bye into the second round.

In the first match Mike beat Rob by 2 and 1 when he scored a six on the par 3 seventh hole, both players first tee shots having found the gorse bushes to the right of the fairway. In the other two matches Richard beat Andrzej 4 and 3 and David beat Bob 3 and 2. The three winners and Rod then played in the next round for the Putter over the back nine at Sheringham whilst Andrzej and Bob played against each other in the first round for the Plate. The clever(!) play by Rob in letting Mike win their match meant he got a bye into the final round for the Plate.

Mike beat Rod 3 and 1, David beat Richard 4 and 3 and Andrzej beat Bob by 1 so the final pairings for the Putter and Plate were David & Mike and Andrzej & Rob respectively. The final rounds were played over the first nine holes of the course with David winning the Putter by 2 and 1 and Rob winning the Plate by 3 and 2.

The good, the bad and the ugly

In the evening a move to have a meal in a nearby Thai restaurant was thwarted by xenophobia in the ranks so instead we made our way to the curry house in Holt before returning to the Eastern Headquarters for an EGM.

This really turned out to be an extraordinary meeting as not only did we follow the agenda but we actually agreed on several issues. During the meeting the locals were alarmed to hear we had archives so we had to assure them that it wasn’t catching.

It was back to Sheringham on Monday morning for the final competition for the Secretary’s Cup. Rod, David and Mike were unable to take part as they had all made other commitments (a matter that was addressed at the previous evening’s EGM). Bob won the Cup with a stableford score of 30 and Richard & Rob came joint second with 24 points.
