Down In One Golf Society

   Newsletter Issue 7 - October 2002

Introduction

Since the last newsletter the society has celebrated the coming of age of its Junior Member and the birthday of its President and experienced yet another superb golf break in Norfolk.

Junior Member’s Coming Of Age Invitational

This event, which was attended by Andrzej, Ian, Richard, Rob and Rod with guest Paul Tuke, was held at Tyrrells Wood on 9th July. It was very appropriate that the only invitee at the invitational should win the trophy donated by the Junior Member. Paul’s winning score was 30 points over 16 holes, Richard came second with 28 and Rob third with 27. The day’s proceedings were rounded off with a curry at the Mogul Dynasty.

President’s Real Invitational Annual Pro-am International Classic

This event was held at Tyrells Wood on 12th August and consisted of individual stableford competitions in the morning over 18 holes followed by two four ball competitions over 9 holes in the afternoon. In the morning David won the President's Invitational Individual Gold Award and Richard won the President's Invitational Individual Silver Award. In the afternoon Rod and Andrzej won the President's Invitational Pairs Gold Award and Vase, which was generously donated by the President himself. Rob and Paul Tuke won the President's Invitational Pairs Silver Award. The competitions were followed by a meal at the Star.

Golf Break in Norfolk

For this autumn’s golf break, which took place from 12th–14th October, the society returned to Norfolk. The first competition, for the Secretary’s Cup, was played over 18 holes at Sheringham Golf Club. Rod was delighted to win this prestigious trophy for the second time with a record breaking score of 40 points. Rob and Ian came second and third with 38 and 32 points respectively. Ian’s score would have been better had not David emerged from the gorse bushes just as he was about to tee off on the last hole.

On the Saturday evening we held our fifth AGM at the society’s Eastern Headquarters. Although this was the usual lively and chaotic affair Ian managed to sleep through most of it. In recognition of Andrzej’s long service as President he was elevated to the role of Lifelong President (hereafter to be referred to as His Excellency Lifelong President or HELP for short). This made the way clear for Rod to take over the presidency and to pass on his duties as Treasurer to Richard. Rob reluctantly agreed to continue as Secretary and to act as Vice President.

Sunday’s match play competitions for the President’s Putter and DIOGS Bowl were played at the Royal Norwich Golf Course. David and Rod reached the final of the President’s Putter and Ian and Mike reached the final for the DIOGS Bowl. Because our first tee time had been delayed we agreed to play the both finals over holes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7. The tension proved to much for the competitors on the 3rd hole as tee shot after tee shot ricocheted off the surrounding trees. In the end the putter was won by David and the bowl was won by Ian.

In the evening we ate at the curry house in Holt and followed the meal with a drink at Eastern Headquarters.

Who invited Bill Oddie?

On our arrival at Royal Cromer on a windy but dry Monday morning several of the competitors said they were a bit tired and would rather visit a museum than play golf! After coffee and a bit of persuasion from the Secretary everyone agreed to play the stableford competition for the Treasurer’s Trophy. Andrzej and David both scored 31 points but Andrzej won the trophy on countback. Mike came third with 28 points.

Christmas Meal

The venue for the Christmas meal this year is the Running Horse in Leatherhead, probably on a Saturday evening in December. The meal will be preceded by a nine hole stableford competition at Pachesham where the Christmas Trophy will be awarded to the player with the third highest score.

Future Golfing Trips

David is organising the next golf break which will be held in France. Information will be posted in the competition diary section of the web site when the bookings have been made.

We hope to celebrate both the veteran’s and president’s birthdays with golf days at Tyrrell’s Wood sometime in May.
