Down In One Golf Society

   Newsletter Issue 9 - November 2003

Introduction

Since the last newsletter the society has “celebrated” the President’s birthday and re-sampled the delights of some of Norfolk’s finest golf courses.

President’s Real Invitational Annual Pro-am International Classic

The year’s event, originally scheduled for sometime in July, was eventually held on 4th September at Tyrells Wood. The only members able to attend at such short notice were the President and the Veteran. The President claimed victory after 18 holes of match play although the Veteran thinks he should have won as he had a lower net score.

Golf Break in Norfolk

This autumn’s golf break took place from 4th to 6th October in Norfolk. After a shaky start, the Newest Member performed a magnificent job in his first days in charge of weather by ensuring that the rain cleared as we started play in the first competition at Royal Cromer Golf Club. David and Rod both scored 32 stableford points in this competition, which was for the Secretary’s Cup, but David was awarded the cup on count-back. Ian came third with 25 points.

The non-event was equally astounding. For the first time in DIOGS history, the President did not resign at the AGM. This demonstrates the strength and skills of the President himself, and the respect he has earned from all DIOGS across the universe (sic).

Throughout the meeting the Newest Member demonstrated his ability to give his full attention to the proceedings whilst pretending to be asleep.

Doesn’t anyone want to play with me?

Andrzej and Rod reached the final of the President’s Putter and Rob and Richard reached the final for the DIOGS Bowl. As by now all the competitors were getting tired we agreed to play the finals over holes 1 to 5 and 17 to 18. In the end both matches were won 4&3 with Andrzej winning the putter and Richard the bowl.

On Monday we drove to Kings Lynn Golf Club for our final competition - the Treasurer’s Trophy.

In the evening we dined at the Bell in Wiverton and then retired to Eastern Headquarters for our 6th AGM. This was a truly unique event. Unique in terms of one event and one non-event.

The event was the extra-ordinary achievements that continue to appear on the Secretary's C.V. Not only is he the best I.T. consultant and carpenter within DIOGS, but now he has reached a pinnacle for attracting local talent. Will this demonstration of new skills never end?

The narcoleptic member (TNM)

Sunday’s competitions for the President’s Putter and DIOGS Bowl were played at Sheringham Golf Course.

Although the wind was testing at times the mix of sea and sky presented magnificent views across the golf course and we all agreed that it was one of the best day’s golf the society had experienced.

As there were only 6 of us the first rounds of the competitions were played as stroke play over 18 holes instead of the usual match play.

The society had not played this course before but that didn’t stop the Veteran using the trees lining each fairway to his advantage managing to rebound no less than 5 of his tee shots back into play.

Fittingly the Treasurer, Richard, won the trophy with 32 stableford points. Rod came second with 27 and Rob third with 24.

Rod also won the Tous Trois Trophie with a total of 13 points.

The golf break was summed up by the Junior Member who thought “It was very very windy. (On Saturday) I came last except for Uncle Andre who came lastest. On Sunday it was raining and then it was nice. I liked the cliffs – it woz good. Uncle David was silly as usual. We had a curry and then we all farted. Ha Ha. Then we went to the pub. Uncle Rob pulled a bird, and Uncle Ian went to sleep. On Monday we went to Kings Lynn. I won”.
